The $1000 Degree

Turing College is about more than just re-inventing education; we’re also re-inventing the way a college is created. We have a bleeding edge learning system, and a radical new way of approaching education, but to be frank, we need to raise enough cash to be able to complete our first Computer Science curriculum. Since the amount we need to raise is fairly small, and we need an initial graduating class to apply for accreditation, we have decided to offer an entire degree's worth of classes for $1000 to a very limited (maximum 128) group of students.

The details:

Basically, you pre-order 100 credits worth of classes, enough for an undergraduate degree that will be offered in the near future. The cost of that pre-order is $1000 USD, and every cent of that goes to paying professors and course creators. Once individual classes are complete, you may start taking them at any time.

FAQ:

Q: What degrees are offered?

A: Our initial degree will be a hybrid technical Computer Science / Software Engineering degree based on advanced programs from MIT, Carnegie Mellon and Cal Tech. Additional science and engineering degrees will follow. This offer also grandfathers you in for any future undergraduate degrees we offer.

Q: What is included for the $1000?

A: All tuition and fees necessary to complete your undergraduate degree, up to a maximum of 100 credits.

Q: What is not included?

A: Textbooks and/or Materials, where applicable.

Q: Is this a guarantee that I will be admitted into the degree program?

A: No. This is only a guarantee that you will be able to take any classes we are able to create, up to a maximum of 100 credits. If you are not accepted into the degree program, you may still take all of the classes, but will not be eligible for a degree or diploma.

Q: Is this a guarantee that I will get my degree?

A: Absolutely not. This is only a guarantee that you will be able to take the classes that make up the degree, not that you will pass any of the classes or be awarded a diploma or degree.

Q: When can I start?

A: We estimate 9-12 months to complete the first degree program. Individual classes may be available before then.

Q: How long do I have to start the degree?

A: There is no expiration date. Start in 10 years if that works in your schedule.

Q: How long do I have to complete the degree?

A: Our system is designed to be self paced. We encourage you to set ambitious goals, but ultimately it is up to you to decide your ideal learning rate.

Q: Is it transferable?

A: Yes. The “gift certificate” is transferable until official student registration. Once registered that student is locked in and no further transferring is possible. All transfers must be registered with Turing College to remain valid.

Q: What if I don’t meet your admissions minimums?

A: If you do not pass our admission process for an accredited degree, you may still take all the classes in the degree program as a continuing education student, and will receive a certificate of completion for each course instead of a diploma.

Q: What if I am not in the US?

A: As long as you meet our technology requirements (broadband connection, modern computer), you can apply for admission to our degree programs or take classes as a continuing education student.

Q: Are you accredited?

A: Not yet. The direct result of this round of fund raising will be application for accreditation at national and regional federally recognized accreditation boards. We can not guarantee we will be granted accreditation, but we feel our chances are very high.

Q: Will my credits transfer to another college/university?

A: Until we are accredited, definitely not. After, it will depend on each school.

Q: Do you accept credit from other schools towards this degree?

A: From recognized accredited schools, yes.

Q: What if I just want to take classes and don’t want a degree?

A: You can skip the admissions process and start immediately (when classes are available) as a continuing education student where you can take up 100 credits in classes (roughly 25 classes).

Q: What is the normal cost for this degree?

A: Our normal tuition will be $250 per credit hour, putting future value at $25,000.

Q: Is this for real?

A: Yes.

Q: Aren’t you going to lose money?

A: Yes. Any time you take outside investment, you lose money repaying the loan or giving up equity. We would rather spend a little extra educating a small group of students rather than just paying interest to a bank or investor. The key is, losing a small amount of money to a small amount of students allows us to create a curriculum that we can offer to a much larger group of students, so the net gain is very positive. Also, we need a group of visionary students to apply for accreditation anyway, and we would much prefer to have a group with a vested interest in the school.

Q: What if you don’t complete the degree or go out of business?

A: There is rarely reward without risk. Our pledge to you is to use your money to create courses, and make any courses we are able to create available to you. We expect to be able to create between 14 and 20 courses in this first round. Even if we are not as wildly successful as we hope to be, any courses we create will be available to you through our online system. Of course, there are always unforeseen circumstances so if you are not comfortable with the risk of losing your pre-order money, we would recommend waiting until the curriculum is complete.

Q: What if I change my mind?  Do you offer refunds?

A: No refunds, but the pre-orders are transferable.
